What to Expect When You Book a Short-Term Rental in Colorado

Colorado has thousands of short-term rentals listed across Airbnb, VRBO, and direct booking sites. The range in quality is wide. Some are exactly what the photos show. Others are not. Here's how to set yourself up for a good stay, and what we do at Elevate BNB to make the process straightforward.

Check-in should be simple

A good rental sends you check-in instructions 24 to 48 hours before arrival, not the morning of. You should have a door code, parking instructions, and a contact number before you leave home. If you're driving into the mountains in the dark and the lockbox code doesn't work, that's a problem that should never happen. At Elevate BNB, check-in details go out the day before, and someone is reachable by text if anything comes up.

The altitude is real

If you're coming from sea level, give yourself a day to adjust before you plan anything strenuous. Estes Park sits at around 7,500 feet. Breckenridge is closer to 9,600. Drink more water than you think you need, go easy on alcohol the first night, and don't plan a 14-mile hike for day one. Most guests feel fine within 24 hours.

Weather changes fast

A clear morning in the mountains can turn into an afternoon thunderstorm in under an hour. Pack layers regardless of the season. In summer, start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by noon. In winter, check road conditions before you drive up any canyon. We keep a weather and road conditions link in every property's welcome guide.

Understand what's included

Most rentals include basic kitchen supplies, linens, and towels. Some include coffee and a few pantry staples. Very few include things like paper towels, dish soap, or laundry detergent beyond a starter supply. Plan to stop at a grocery store on your way in. In Estes Park, the King Soopers on the east side of town is the easiest option. The NPS Rocky Mountain National Park trip planner is also worth bookmarking before you arrive.

Know who to call

Before you arrive, confirm you have a working contact number for the property manager. Not a general inbox, an actual number. If the hot tub isn't heating or the WiFi is down, you want to reach someone who can fix it, not file a ticket and wait. Our guests have a direct line to our team from the moment they book.

Leave it as you found it

Most rentals ask guests to start the dishwasher, take out the trash, and strip the beds before checkout. It's in the house rules. Read them before you arrive so checkout morning isn't a scramble. We keep our checkout list short and reasonable, and it's always in the welcome guide.

Colorado is worth the trip. A little preparation on the front end means you spend your time on the trails and at the table, not troubleshooting logistics. If you're looking for a property that makes all of this easy, our Estes Park Cabin 6 is five minutes from the RMNP entrance, and the Jefferson mountain view home is a quieter base with a hot tub and big views.
